Balayage in Sunny Isles Beach: Lived-In, Low-Maintenance Color

At XO Salon & Spa, 18206 Collins Ave in Sunny Isles Beach, we hand-paint balayage for clients who want color that looks natural on day one and still looks intentional months later. We offer three ways to get it: Partial Balayage, Balayage Full Head and Air Touch Balayage, each finished so your tone stays soft and glossy. Not sure which one is yours? What is balayage?

Balayage is a French hair-color technique (the word means “to sweep”) in which the colorist paints lightener or color onto the hair by hand instead of placing a foil for every piece. The result is soft, blended dimension that looks sun-kissed and grows out gradually, so there’s no harsh line at the root and you can space out your appointments.

Traditional foil highlights lift evenly, stripe by stripe, from close to the root. Balayage is placed where light would naturally hit your hair, which is why it reads as dimension rather than “highlights.” If you’re a brunette who wants to stay brunette, our guide to balayage for brunettes goes deeper.

Balayage options at XO

Every balayage at XO starts with a conversation about your base color, your hair’s history and how much upkeep you want. These are the three services you’ll see when you book.

Partial Balayage

We hand-paint around your face, crown and top layers, where brightness matters most. It’s the gentlest way to try balayage for the first time, and a good refresh between full sessions. Starting at $200.

Balayage Full Head

Hand-painted dimension through the whole head, top and underneath, for a brighter, all-over lived-in look that grows out seamlessly. A gloss or toner and shampoo are included. Starting at $300.

Air Touch Balayage

Before lightening, we use the airflow from a blow-dryer to separate out the shorter, finer hairs, then lighten what remains. That gives the softest, most diffused blend we offer, with very little visible regrowth. It takes longer than classic balayage, and a toner or gloss is included. Starting at $600.

Balayage Full HeadAll-over lived-in dimensionWhole head$300
Air Touch BalayageThe softest blend, minimal regrowthWhole head$600

Plan for 1 to 4 hours, depending on whether you’re booking a partial or a full head, and Air Touch can take up to 5 hours. We’ll confirm your timing when you book.

Which balayage is right for you?

  • This is your first balayage: start with Partial Balayage. You’ll see the effect around your face without committing your whole head.
  • You want brightness around your face only: Partial Balayage, or Face Frame Highlights (starting at $60) if you prefer a crisper foil placement.
  • You have a darker base or you’re a brunette: a Full Head balayage in caramel or mocha tones, sometimes paired with Low Lights (starting at $60) for multi-tonal depth.
  • You want the least visible regrowth: Air Touch Balayage.
  • You already have balayage and the root feels harsh: Root melt + Gloss (starting at $120) softens the line and refreshes the tone without a full appointment.
  • You have some grey to blend: tell us at booking, so we can plan your base and your balayage together.

New to XO? Start with a color consultation. We’ll look at your hair together, agree on a plan and, if needed, perform a strand test and a patch test before your appointment. Call us at (305) 871-9770 to book.

2026–2027 balayage shades Sunny Isles clients are asking for

The biggest shift we’re seeing is warmth. Icy, ashy blonde is giving way to butter, honey and peach blondes: creamy and golden, and much kinder to sun-kissed skin. Paris colorist David Mallett told Elle France that very cold, ashy blondes are “running out of steam.”

For brunettes, mocha balayage, soft coffee-toned ribbons over a darker base, is having a big moment. Pinterest’s 2026 Beauty Trend Report shows searches for “mocha balayage hair” up 949% year over year. That’s a measure of how fast interest is growing, not how many people search. Soft copper blonde is rising too, up 845% on Pinterest.

Across all of these, the direction is the same: seamless blending finished with a gloss, rather than high-contrast stripes. If rich brown is more your style, ask us about expensive brunette shades like mocha, truffle and cherry cola.

How a balayage appointment at XO works

  1. Consultation. We look at your natural color, any previous color, the condition of your hair and your inspiration photos, and agree on the lightest and darkest tones you’re comfortable with.
  2. Sectioning and painting. We section your hair and hand-paint each section, or use the Air Touch method to separate the finer hairs first.
  3. Processing. We watch the lift closely so your hair reaches the right level without being over-processed. We work with L’Oréal Professionnel Blond Studio, Wella and Redken Shades EQ.
  4. Gloss or toner, then bond care. We refine the tone, so honey stays honey and caramel stays caramel, and add shine. Every balayage and highlights service at XO includes a K18 and Olaplex No.2 bond treatment, because hair quality is our number one priority.
  5. Finish. A blowout finish is booked separately. Add a Blowout (starting at $55) if you’d like to leave fully styled.

Keeping balayage fresh in sun, salt and humidity

Living a few steps from the ocean is wonderful for your mood and hard on your color. Here’s what we tell our clients:

  • Rinse right after the beach or pool. Fresh water first, before salt or chlorine has time to dry onto the hair.
  • Use sulfate-free, color-safe shampoo, and wash two or three times a week rather than every day.
  • Protect before you style. Use a heat and UV protectant every time you blow-dry or spend the day outside.
  • Refresh with a gloss if you like (optional). Gloss/Toner (starting at $60) brightens tone and shine, and Root melt + Gloss (starting at $120) softens grow-out.
  • Plan around the season. If you spend part of the year up north, book a gloss before you leave so your color travels well, and a refresh when you’re back in Sunny Isles.

How often you come back is up to you. Well-placed balayage grows out so softly that it can still look great a year later. For home care, we use and carry Oribe, and we’re happy to recommend the right products for your hair.

Balayage FAQs

What is balayage?

Balayage is a French hair-color technique (the word means “to sweep”) in which the colorist hand-paints lightener or color onto sections of hair instead of using foils for every piece. The result is soft, blended dimension that looks sun-kissed and grows out gradually, so there is no harsh line at the root and touch-ups can be spaced out.

How long does a balayage appointment take?

Most balayage appointments at XO take 1 to 4 hours. A partial balayage sits at the shorter end and a full head at the longer end (Air Touch up to 5 hours), depending on your hair’s length, thickness and starting color. A blowout finish is booked separately, so add one if you’d like to leave fully styled.

How often do you need to touch up balayage?

It’s up to you. Because balayage is hand-painted to grow out softly, there’s no harsh root line forcing you back, and it can still look great a year later. If you’d like to brighten the tone or boost shine in between, an optional gloss or toner refresh is a quick appointment.

What’s the difference between balayage and Air Touch balayage?

Classic balayage is hand-painted freehand. Air Touch uses the airflow from a blow-dryer to separate out the shorter, finer hairs before the remaining strands are lightened. That gives an even softer, more diffused blend with less visible regrowth. It usually takes longer than classic balayage. XO offers both, plus a partial balayage.

Can brunettes get balayage without going blonde?

Yes. Brunette balayage can stay within brown tones, for example mocha, caramel, or chocolate ribbons on a darker base, so the hair looks richer and more dimensional without turning blonde. A gloss finish adds shine. Mocha balayage is one of 2026’s fastest-growing hair searches on Pinterest. Ask your colorist for low-contrast placement.

How do I protect balayage from the sun, salt water and chlorine?

Rinse your hair with fresh water right after the beach or pool, use a sulfate-free, color-safe shampoo, and use a heat and UV protectant before styling. Book a gloss or toner between color appointments to refresh the tone and shine, especially for blonde balayage, which can turn brassy in strong South Florida sun.
